Description
The Anti-Atlas Mountains, also known as Lesser Atlas is a mountain range in Morocco. It is part of the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa. It stretch 310.68 miles (500 km) from the Atlantic Ocean to the city of Tafilalt. The mountains have an average heights of 8,200–8,900 feet (2,500–2,700 meters). This painting was inspired by an image taken by #Landsat in 2011.
The mountains contain some of the world's largest and most diverse mineral resources including iron ore, lead ore, copper, silver, mercury, rock salt, phosphate, marble, anthracite coal and natural gas.
The Anti-Atlas Mountains got their start hundreds of millions of years ago, before the end of the Paleozoic era (540 -- 250 million years ago). Because of their age, the mountains are a treasure trove of fossils including the beak of an enormous flying reptile and a leg bone from a giant plant eating dinosaur.
The mountains were home to the Atlas Bear, Barbary Lion, and the North African Elephant but they are now extinct.
There are no large cities these mountains. The indigenous Berber people live in villages throughout the mountains. They have lived in these mountains for thousands of years.
Speaking of mountains, riddle me this…
Q. How did the egg climb the mountain?
A. It scrambled up!
Useless Fact…
Mountain goats, animals that inhabit most mountains in North America, are not goats but antelopes. They can jump up to 12 feet in a single bound.
