Description
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world. Located in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, Australia, it includes over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometers (1,400 miles) -- an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers. It is so big it can be seen from space. It is approximately the size of Texas and is estimated to be 5,000 to 10,000 years old.
It is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
More than 1,500 kinds of fish live in the Great Barrier Reef. The smallest is the Stout Infant Fish which is 9/32 inch (7 millimeters) long and the largest is the whale shark that can grow to 39 feet (12 meters) long. It also contains some of the deadliest animals in the ocean, including Box Jellyfish, Blue Ringed Octopus, and Stone Fish.
Climate change is the biggest threat to the Reef. Warmer ocean temperature put stress on the coral which causes bleaching. There have been nine major bleaching events since 1980. The reef is in the midst of a 10th bleaching event right now (3/18/2022).
The depth of the Reef varies from very shallow, ankle depth areas to 6,560 fee (2,000 meters) deep.
There have been at least 1,600 shipwrecks within the boundaries of the Reef.
Speaking of coral, riddle me this…
