Description
Recently, I posted a painting inspired by salt evaporation ponds. I am often inspired by the aerial views of these ponds. Little did I know that these paintings have a classification. They are aerial landscape art. I’ve done other paintings, inspired by aerial images. Let’s face it, I like aerial views.
I discovered that Richard Diebenkorn’s 135-painting “Ocean Park” series is considered aerial landscape art as are some of Georgia O’Keeffe’s works, like her “Mountains and Lake” painting. Current artists doing aerial landscape art include Yvonne Jacquette and Susan Crile.
This painting, inspired by an aerial photo of Old Town San Diego, is in the style of Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series, which are almost Cubist.
The Kumeyaay Nation of Native Americans has lived in this area for 9,000 years. Old Town San Diego is where San Diego was first established by Europeans in 1798. Old Town is now a tourist attraction with historical sites, museums, restaurants, shops, and hotels. Old Town is the big purple shape in the middle of the painting with Interstate Highways 8 and 5 represented by the beige bands on the left. Presidio Park is in the upper right corner. The Whaley House, built on a graveyard and supposedly the most haunted house in the U.S, is in the lower right corner.
Riddle me this…
Q: What did the Pacific Ocean say to San Diego?
A: Nothing, it just waved.
