Description
I've painted elephant wrinkles and giraffe spots so why not paint zebra stripes. This painting shows the strips of a Plains zebra which has a “shadow” stripe between the black stripes. There are three subspecies of zebras, plains, mountain, and Gervy’s zebras. Each species has a distinct stripe pattern.
Zebra stripes have three purposes. They act as camouflage to confuse their main predators:-- lions and hyenas. Scientists believe that because zebras live in herds, the mass of strips in the herd act as an optical illusion that confuses the predators so they don’t try to attack the herd alone.
Like the giraffe’s spots, the strips help manage body temperature. The strips also confuse the Tsetse flies, which bite them and cause Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in both animals and humans. Research studies proved this theory.
Now the big question: Are zebras black on white or white on black? For centuries, the common wisdom was that they were black on white. But scientists have determined that they are white on black. A zebra embryo is completely black until a certain point in the 12-13 month gestation period when the white stripes appear.
Riddle me this…
Q Why do zebras have stripes?
A. Because they don’t want to be spotted.
Consider this…
The zookeeper told me I wasn’t allowed to buy the animals so I asked why the zebra had a barcode.
