The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world. Located in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, Australia, it includes over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometers (1,400 miles) -- an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers. It is so big it can be seen from space. It is approximately the size of Texas and is estimated to be 5,000 to 10,000 years old.
It is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
More than 1,500 kinds of fish live in the Great Barrier Reef. The smallest is the Stout Infant Fish which is 9/32 inch (7 millimeters) long and the largest is the whale shark that can grow to 39 feet (12 meters) long. It also contains some of the deadliest animals in the ocean, including Box Jellyfish, Blue Ringed Octopus, and Stone Fish.
