Description
Glasgow sits on the bank of the River Clyde and has been in existence for centuries. The Romans built outposts in the area to protect it from marauding Caledonians,. The Christian Missionary Saint Mungo formally founded Glasgow in the 6th century when he built a church on the site of what is now the Glasgow Cathedral. Glasgow’s Gaelic name is “Glaschu,” which means “green space,” Today, Glasgow is home to 635,640 people.
Fun Facts
• There is an area on Planet Mars that NASA named “Glasgow,” after Scotland's largest city.
• Famous people from Glasgow include actor David McCallum. His father David McCallum Sr., was the principle first violinist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Scrooge McDuck, the Disney multi-billionaire cartoon duck also came from Glasgow.
• In 1812, Henry Bell launched the “Comet” at Port Glasgow. It was Europe’s first commercially successful steam ship.
• The Fossil Grove at Victoria Park contains 11 fossilized tree stumps that are 330 million years old – twice as old as dinosaurs.
• Glasgow’s underground railroad is the third oldest in the world. It began operating in 1896. It is known as “The Clockwork Orange” because of its bright orange carriages and its reliable service.
