Description
An 1850 map of Cornhill, London is the map that started it all! "It" is my fascination with painting antique maps and learning about the cities I painted. So, thank you Cornhill, London. I’m having a great time and learning a lot thanks to you
!
Cornhill is a ward or district of London. It is named after one of three ancient hills in London. The other two are Tower Hill, home to of the Tower of London, and Ludgate Hill, which hosts St Paul's Cathedral.
Cornhill was the historic center of London and served as its financial center. Its history dates to Roman times. It was also the site of the first mechanically pumped public water system in the city which began operating in 1582. The system used a water wheel to pump water from the Thames River near the London Bridge through lead pipes to four sections of the city.
Today, Cornhill is the location for many opticians and makers of optical apparatus such as microscopes and telescopes. The 2012 Olympic marathon course went through the Cornhill area.
Speaking of marathons, riddle me this…
Q. Why couldn’t the dog run in the marathon?
A. It wasn’t a part of the human race!
Word of the Week…
Waesucks is another way of saying “alas!”
Consider this…
“A gentle word, a kind look, a good-natured smile can work wonders and accomplish miracles.” ~ William Hazlitt
Be Kind…
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.” ― Roy T. Bennett, "The Light in the Heart"
