Description
Bologna is the capital and largest city of the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy. Humans have lived in the area since at least the 3rd millennium BCE. Over the centuries, various cultures left their mark on the area including the Etruscan, the Gaul, the Roman Empire Visigoths, Huns, Goths, and Lombards.
Today, Bologna has a population of about 400,000 people and 150 nationalities. It is the 7th largest city in Italy. It is an important agricultural, industrial, financial and transport hub in northern Italy, and headquarters for large mechanical, electronic and food companies.
Inventor and engineer Guglielmo Marconi was born in Bologna. He is best known for his work in developing long distance radio telegraph. Actor Rossano Brazzi was also a native of Bologna. He is best known for his roles in the movies “Three Coins in a Fountain” and “South Pacific.”
Bologna has the distinction of being the birthplace of bologna (baloney). It was invented sometime during the 1400s. Today, it is eaten in countries all over the world with only minor changes in the basic recipe to accommodate local tastes. It is called parizer (“Pairisan sausage”) Yugoslavia, Hungary and Romania; polony in Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa. There is even a vegetarian bologna.
Speaking of bologna, riddle me this…
Q. What did one sandwich say to the other?
A. Boy, you are full of bologna
