Description
This pink lake is located on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in southeast Mexico near the border with Belize and Guatemala. Pink lakes are found all over the world. The water is pink due to several factors including the salt content of the water along with the variety and density of algae in the water. The pink “shade” of the lakes also depends on the time of day and the weather. The lakes are at their “pinkest” at high noon on a clear warm day, There are at least a dozen pink lakes in the Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve. This painting was inspired by one of them. The Reserve is also home to animals like flamingos, crocodiles, sea turtles, jaguars, and all kinds of sea birds.
Las Colorados is the center of a vast salt harvesting industry in the area. In fact, Mexico is the fifth largest salt exporter in the world. The ancient Mayans discovered that the area was perfect for salt harvesting. When ocean tides brought sea water, it settled on the hard dry land along the coast. The sun would evaporate the water leaving the salt on the ground to be harvested and then used or traded with other villages.
Today, artificial salt ponds are constructed to increase salt production.
Speaking of salt, riddle me this…

A. Don't worry, he was cured.
Useless Fact…
The oppressive salt tax in France was one of the causes of the French Revolution.
