This painting was inspired by an antique map from 1864 of Lancaster, PA. You are probably asking yourself: “Self, why did she paint it like that – grouping related colors together in quadrants?” The reason is simple my Gentle Readers. The cartographer who drew the map divided it into four “wards” and gave each a different color:
Green = Northwest Ward
Red = Northeast Ward
Blue = Southeast Ward
Yellow = Southwest Ward
I followed the map maker’s lead, but it would have been very boring to paint each quadrant a solid color. So, I used every hue in my drawer of forgotten paints.
Did you know that during the American Revolution, Lancaster was the capitol of the United States for one day? On September 17, 1777, the Continental Congress had to leave Philadelphia because the city had been captured by the British army. They spent one day in Lancaster and then moved on to Ward, PA.
