I love Brussels! It is a fascinating city with nice people, good food, lots of things to see and do including 18 museums and a long, fascinating history. It has existed since the Stone age and because of its location, it has become a sort of crossroads of Europe. This painting was inspired by an antique map created in 1837.
Today, it is the headquarters of the European Union because many of the EU’s departments are located there, mainly the administrative and legislative. Brussels is also the headquarters for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Brussels has been a center for artistic and philosophical development, It served as a safe harbor for artists and thinkers facing political (or simply criminal) persecution in the 19th century. However not all dissidents were welcome – Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were expelled from the city in1848. Other notable dissidents who called Brussels home include writers Victor Hugo and Alexander Dumas.
