Description
Salt evaporation ponds, also called salt pans intrigue me. Actually, salt ponds and salt pan are not the same. Salt ponds are to extract salt from seawater, while salt pans occur naturally, usually in dry areas like the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
Salt evaporation ponds have interesting shapes because they are built in the context of the local topography. They are also colorful, ranging from light green to dark red depending on the amount and type of algae in the pond.
If you have flown into San Francisco, you may have seen the San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds from the air. They cover 16,500 acres on the east side of the Bay and date back to the California Gold Rush (1848 – 1855) when salt was used to preserve food.
I’ve done several paintings inspired by images of salt ponds, but they are not representations of any existing ponds. I use basic shapes and colors as a starting point and explore the possibilities.
Salt offers us possibilities in many aspects of our lives. For example, Robert Baden-Powell, a British army officer, writer, and co-founder, with his sister Agnes, of the Girl Scouts said:
“Life would pall if it were all sugar; salt is bitter if taken by itself; but when tasted as part of the dish, it savors the meat. Difficulties are the salt of life.”
Personally, I take life with a grain of salt, plus a slice of lime and a shot of tequila.
Speaking of salt,
Riddle me this…
Q: Why do seals live in salt water?
A: Pepper makes them sneeze.
