I love Liege! It might have something to do with the fact that I stayed in an apartment above a gelato shop and across the street there was a boulangerie (a bakery specializing in breads) that made the best pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant) ever! If you must have “pain,” it is best when stuffed with Belgian chocolate!
Liege is in southeast Belgium near the Netherlands and Germany. It was originally settled during Roman times and in 546 AD it became a pilgrimage site when a small Christian chapel was built on the River Meuse. In the 10th century, Liege was chosen as the capital of a new principality ruled by bishops who held both secular and spiritual powers. That lasted until 1794, when the residents of Liege, inspired by the French Revolution, ousted city's ruler Antoine de Mean.
