Delft is a city in the Netherlands, Delft has the Dutch nickname Prinsenstad or prince city. It is the home of the Dutch royal family including William of Orange (155 –1584). But it is best known for the Delft Blue Pottery and as the birthplace of artist Johannes Vermeer, best known for his painting “The Girl with the Pearl Earring.”
The blue and white Delft pottery has been made since the 17th century. At one point there were 33 pottery factories in the city but today only one remains. Royal Delft. The pottery is unique because it was originally made not from porcelain clay like other potteries but from clay that was coated with a tin glaze after it was fired.
Ironically the Delft blue paint composed of blue oxide is black in its natural form. The painted pottery must be fired in a kiln at more than 100 degrees Celsius before it turns blue
