Description
The Great Red Spot
Jupiter’s Red Spot, aka The Great Red Spot, is a persistent anticyclonic storm that has been going on for centuries and is the largest in the universe. It was first observed in 1665 when astronomer Gian Domenico Cassini wrote about a "Permanent Storm" on the planet.
Nerd Alert: An anticyclonic storm has a high pressure center over a low pressure region. The wind in the high-pressure area rotates in the opposite direction to the wind in the low pressure region.
Great Red Spot Facts:
• It rotates counterclockwise and takes about six earth days to complete one rotation.
• The color varies over time from dark red to light pink.
• It is large enough to hold 2 – 3 Earth-size planets although it lost about 15% of its size between 1996 and 2006 according to scientists at the University of California, Berkley.
• It has been circling the planet at the same latitude for as long as humans have been observing it.
• Wind speeds vary from 275 and 425 mph.
Speaking of Jupiter
Riddle Me This…

Consider This…
“Star light, star bright
First star I see tonight,
Wish I may, which I might,
Oh wait, it is just a satellite! ~Anonymous
