Description
These are the spots of a Masai giraffe, also called a Kilimanjaro giraffe It is s the largest of the nine subspecies of giraffes. It lives in Kenya and Tanzania. It has irregular jagged spots and the males have a large bump on their foreheads. Giraffe spots have two purposes. First, they act as camouflage. Young Giraffes can hide in a bunch of trees and the spots help them blend in. The spots also help giraffes stay cool because there is a vast network of blood vessels under the spots that release heat
from the body.
Two more fun facts:
• Giraffes can clean their ears with their 21-inch tongues.
• Giraffes and humans have the same number of bones in their necks – seven! Each bone in a giraffe’s neck is 10 to 12 inches high.
