Description
When thinking about what to write for this post, I searched the Google Machine for “line + art.” I found 8.86 BILLION pages in 0.61 seconds. Who knew there was so much to say about lines in art! It boggles the mind. At least 90% of those pages include the statement: “There are no straight lines in nature.” Even the horizon or skyline appears straight, it is a very long gentle curve that can only be seen from above.
My favorite definition of a line comes from Paul Klee (1879 –1950), an Expressionist and Surrealist painter, who said, “A line is a dot out for a walk.”
Then there is Henri Matisse, a French Fauvist painter who said; “Remember, a line cannot exist alone; it always brings a companion along. Do remember that one line does nothing; it is only in relation to another that it creates a volume.”
That is what I did with this painting, I brought a bunch of lines together.
But my all-time favorite quote about lines and art in general comes from Joan Miro (1893 – 1983), a Surrealist and Experimental painter: “A simple line painted with the brush can lead to freedom and happiness.”
This is why I paint. It makes me happy! I will never be in the same league with the artists I quoted above and that is totally OK. My painting brings joy and meaning to my life and I get to share my joy with you My Gentle Readers. Thank you!
Speaking of lines
Riddle me this…
Q: Did you hear about the artist who always took things too far?
A: She didn’t know where to draw the line.
One final through on lines and art: The line between art and not art is usually the frame.
