Description
this painting was inspired by a map of Cairo Egypt in 1856.
Cairo is the capitol of Egypt and the site of one of the oldest civilizations in the world dating back at least 6000 years. During that time, Cairo was ruled by Pharaohs, Caliphs, Turkish Khedives, Romans, the French and British colonizers.
Today, it is the largest city in Africa. Cairo is the only city in the world that still has one of the seven ancient “wonders of the world” --The Pyramids of Giza. Cairo also has the largest food court in the world with 25 restaurants that can seat 4,23 people at a time. Cairo’s al-Azhar University is one of the oldest in the world dating back to 973 CE.
The City has produced many famous people including Mohamed ElBaradei, former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency and winner of the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, singer and songwriter Raffi, chef Michael Mina, mathematician and cryptographer Taher Elgamal, documentary film maker Jehane Noujaim, and author and actor Omar Sharif.
